I’m a freelance writer and editor with a bold background — and foreground — in journalism and communications.
First, the foreground. I’ve been published in international newspapers and websites, including U.S. News & World Report, The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s. Not to mention trade publications, news and industry sites, community newspapers and entertainment media. I write regularly for Madison’s alt weekly, (the) Isthmus, BRAVA Magazine and Tone Madison. I’ve also had bylines for Audiofemme and the Wisconsin State Journal.
My mission, should you choose to accept it, is to engagingly craft the written word so it reaches your audiences in a direct and effective way. Whether it’s writing for non-profits and public service organizations or entrepreneurs and small businesses, I build a succinct, quality reading experience that makes an impact. From website copy to long-form nonfiction works, I have a knack for diving deep into subjects and relating complicated concepts to both experts and laymen. Send me an email if you’d care to discuss or check out my portfolio for more details.
And now, the aforementioned background. I embarked on my journalism career as print gave way to web readership. This helped me develop a deep and ongoing understanding of how to reach and impact readers through mediums from newspapers and newswires to websites and e-newsletters.
Going way back, I grew up on a family farm in Central Illinois, then studied journalism and international relations. Next, I moved to Costa Rica for the better part of a gap year before relocating to New York City and working as as a financial reporter covering the world coffee, cocoa, sugar and cotton markets, incidentally at the onset of what became known as The Great Recession. Very interesting times. I’ve lied for 10 years in Madison, Wisconsin, and enjoy playing music, experiencing nature and practicing yoga.
What it comes down to is I just love people and people love stories. Heck, people are stories! I’ve written for and about local, state and national organizations and businesses and work in public relations. Here are some of those roles:
• Commodities reporter, Dow Jones Newswires
• Editor, Food Manufacturing magazine and FoodManufacturing.com
• Communications director, Wisconsin Newspaper Association
• Public information specialist, Cooperative Extension and Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development
• Marketing and communications manager, Al. Ringling Theatre
• Education coordinator, International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association
• Director, Wisconsin 4-H State Communications Team
